Are you Driving Your Project with the Brakes On? \u201cDriving with the brakes on \u2026 swimming with your boots on,\u201d these lyrics from Del Amitri\u2019s song remind me of some projects I worked on. Getting work done was like stepping on the accelerator. Decision-making, on the other foot, felt like stepping on the brakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The song describes two lovers who are, \u201cdriving through the long night, trying to figure who\u2019s right and who\u2019s wrong.\u201d This pretty much sums up key stakeholders fighting over the right or wrong decision to make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the stakeholders is driving, \u201cShe\u2019s got the wheel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other stakeholder is the passenger, \u201cI\u2019ve got nothing except\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Except in projects, there could be many more stakeholders who are in the passenger seats who also want to take the wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you drive faster? Before you get into the car, decide who has the keys. Document it using the DACI decision-making framework:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Who is the driver who has the keys?<\/li>
  2. Who is the approver who pays for gas?<\/li>
  3. Who are contributors – passengers who have a say?<\/li>
  4. Who needs to be informed – passengers who don\u2019t have a say?<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    When deciding on the destination and the route (\u201cwho\u2019s right and who\u2019s wrong\u201d) another consider using Force Field Analysis. You propose a plan, then evaluate forces for vs. forces against the change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Finally, it\u2019s important for all stakeholders to commit to supporting the group\u2019s decision, \u201cUnless the moon falls \u2026 unless continents collide \u2026 nothing\u2019s gonna make me break from her side.\u201d Outside of the decision-making meeting, the stakeholders must stand as one and not break from the group\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
